The nature preservation area APA Santo António
 The nature preservation area APA Santo Antônio was established in August 1994 and has an area of 23,000 Hectares (57,000 acres). The objective for this establishment is the protection of the coastal ecological systems with major ecological importance; especially the remaining Mata Atlântica with its abundance of fauna and flora.
Mentionable are the sea turtles whose picture you see on the 2 Reais bank notes. During the spawn in the first October week the turtles go onto the beach to lay their eggs. The turtles as well as their eggs are strictly protected.
In the area a number of turtle protection units have been installed since 1997. Their objective is predominately the preservation and protection of the marine ecological systems, especially through counseling. In the meantime the 200 volunteers saved several turtles, wales, penguins and other sea birds during the past years.
