The lively city in southern Bahias

Porto Seguro was founded in 1534 and lies approx. 30 km (19 miles) south of Santo André. The City has around 100,000 inhabitants on an area of approx. 2,400 km² (927 square mile). In general it is regarded as Brazils birth place because on 22. April 1500 the Portuguese Pedro Álvares Cabral first set foot on Brazilian soil in Santa Cruz Cabrália. Porto Seguro is therefore one of the oldest city in Brazil.

Porto Seguro is divided into the upper and lower city. The historic upper city, from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of the coast, has recently been proclaimed protected cultural artifact. Next to the oldest church in Brazil, the Igreja da Misicórdia, built in 1526, stands the only nine years younger Igreja Nossa Senhora da Penha, in which the oldest Brazilian icon, a picture of Franz of Assisi, hangs. Also in the upper city you can find the ruins of an additional church and a Jesuit monastery dating back to 1534. In the vicinity of the ruins is also the Marca do Descobrimento, a two meter (6.5 feet) pillar with which the Portuguese manifested their possession claim.

The vigorous life really takes place in the lower city Porto Seguros. During the daytime the shopping lanes await you and in the evening one meets on the Passarela do Álcool with its numerous bars and restaurants.

The international airport of Porto Seguro was built in 1993 and contributed integrally to the economical and tourist progress. Today Porto Seguro is the main tourist approach point of the region and so with the most frequented city in Brazil.
